Ex-Mooseheart student charged with sex assault
Mooseheart officials have removed a 17-year-old student charged with three felony sex crimes.
Abraham Mazon, 17, of Chicago, was arrested Aug. 11 and charged with one count of predatory criminal sexual assault and two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, according to police.
School officials said the arrest followed a July 31 complaint at the Batavia-area school for at-risk children. Mazon was sent to the home of his legal guardian the day of the initial report, and demitted as a student the day of his arrest.
Neither school officials nor the Kane County sheriff's office would elaborate on the charges, which stem from a Jan. 26 incident involving a victim younger than 13, according to court filings.
Mazon, who appears to have no prior criminal history in Kane County, faces up to 30 years in prison if found guilty of predatory criminal sexual assault, a Class X felony.
The teenager remained in the Kane County jail Monday, unable to post 10 percent of a $500,000 bond. His next court date is Wednesday before Judge James C. Hallock.
Operated by the fraternal Moose organization, Mooseheart Child City and School is a 1,000-acre residential and educational facility that has served more than 11,000 children since its founding in 1913.
