Get free screening at Provena St. Joe
Get a free skin cancer screening from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 29, at Provena St. Joseph Hospital Bob and Edna Meadows Regional Cancer Care Center, 77 N. Airlite St., Elgin. The screening is free of charge, but performed by appointment only by Dr. Suleman Bangash and physician assistant Jake Klaustermeir. Milk Pail to host classic car show
The Milk Pail Restaurant, off Route 25, just north of I-90, will host its 11th annual Milk Pail Classic Car Show from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30. Food and beverages, including a beer garden, will be available with shaded parking areas for the early birds. Entry fee is $3; spectators are admitted free. The first 200 drivers of the classic cars will receive goody bags filled with catalogs, car memorabilia and a dash plaque as a thank you for bringing their special cars and sharing them with the public and fellow car enthusiasts. Ballroom dancing offered at Sun City
A ballroom dance party is planned for Sunday, Aug. 30, at Sun City Prairie Lodge, 12880 Del Webb Blvd., Huntley. Attendees will receive a free rumba lesson by Jim and Barbara Finn. They can dance to the most popular social dances at the first monthly dance. DJ Jiving' Jimmy will be playing a mix of music from the oldies to the newsies. The event includes demonstrations by amateur dancers and social dancing. The dance is open to all; couples and singles are welcome. The Drendel Ballroom will serve complimentary refreshments and offer door prizes. Doors open at 2 p.m. The free rumba lesson will be held from 2:30 to 3:15 p.m. and social dancing is from 3:15 to 6 p.m. Admission is by advance registration. Dance to Big Band music Sunday
Les Pace and the Pacemakers will host a free public dance from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30, at the Elgin Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, 1601 Weld Road. The music will be generally from the Big Band era for dancing, singing along or just listening. Refreshments and light food will be available for purchase. Help restock shelves with Hunger Hustle
Join the Hunger Hustle and enjoy a fun 5K Run/Walk on Sunday, Aug. 30, at Lifetime Fitness, 451 Rolls Road, Algonquin. Help restock the shelves at the local Algonquin/Lake in the Hills Food Pantry. Cost for participants (age 14 and older) is $10 or equal value of nonperishable food items. Submit your pics for photo contest
There's still time to submit your photos for the annual village of Algonquin photo contest. This year's theme: "Exploring Algonquin" will focus on photos that depict being an involved community through public art, volunteerism, work, community events and those serving in community organizations. Last year's contest featured 19 photographers submitting more than 150 photos. Winners were recognized at a village committee of the whole meeting.
Applications are available at the village hall, 220 Harnish Drive, Algonquin, as well as online at algonquin.org. All ages are welcome to participate and demonstrate. Selected photos will be used in publications as well as featured in the village's 2010 calendar. Entries are due Tuesday, Sept. 1. For more information, call (847) 658-2700.
