Elgin woman charged with stealing fake hair from beauty supply

A $10 bag of hair could cost an Elgin woman up to $2,500 in fines.

Ethel T. Archer, 30, of the 1100 block of Fleetwood Drive, is charged with retail theft. Police say she stole the 12-inch faux locks Thursday. And that could land her in prison for up to a year.

She is accused of stealing the synthetic, tangle-free hair from a local beauty supply in the first block of Clock Tower Plaza - the sort of hair is sometimes used in hair weaves and extensions.

According to police reports, Archer entered the store with a friend, picked up the package of hair, stuffed it inside her pants and left without paying for it.

The manager called police and Archer threw the hair under a parked car in the nearby lot because she was scared, police said, adding that she was crying.

The officer arrested Archer shortly after the manager positively identified her and he also returned the hair to the store, police said.

Archer was released pending a hearing before a judge at 9 a.m. Sept. 4 at Elgin Branch Court.
