Champaign County man sentenced in fatal DUI
URBANA -- A Champaign County judge says a man whose drunken driving caused the death of a couple with whom he was friendly will have to spend at least the next 11 years in prison.
Circuit Court Judge Heidi Ladd imposed a 13-year sentence on 43-year-old David Black of Broadlands after Black pleaded guilty Friday to aggravated driving under the influence. Ladd said that under truth-in-sentencing rules, Black will have to serve at least 85 percent of the term.
Black was accused of causing the deaths of Bill and Julie Orndorff of Broadlands when his van rear-ended the motorcycle the couple were riding on.
Black's attorney, Assistant Public Defender George Vargas, told the judge that evidence showed that the Orndorffs were also intoxicated at the time of the crash.
