Algonquin teen charged in Carpentersville drive-by shooting
Carpentersville police have arrested an Algonquin teen for what they say was his role in a June drive-by shooting.
Helver Martinez, 17, of the 1400 block of Charles Avenue, was charged Thursday with aggravated discharge of a firearm, a Class 1 felony that carries between four and 15 years in prison.
Police say that 20 minutes after midnight on June 8, Martinez fired 28 rounds into a house in the first block of Alameda Drive in Carpentersville as the car he rode in passed the house.
At least three people were home, but nobody was hurt, said Cmdr. Timothy Bosshart, adding that Martinez's likely target was a rival gang member who lives in the house.
The teenager used a 9 mm Uzi submachine gun, which police later recovered, Bosshart said.
"It's like an assault rifle," Bosshart said.
Police have made no other arrests in the gang-related case, Bosshart said.
Judge John Noverini Friday morning set Martinez's bail at $500,000 - he needs to pay $50,000 to get out.
He was unable to post bond and was taken to the Kane County jail.
He is due in court 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Kane County Judicial Center.
