Toddler lucky after jump from second-story window
A 3-year-old boy is fortunate to have relatively minor injuries after he fell out of a second-story window Thursday afternoon in Plato Township.
The toddler - whom authorities were not identifying - was airlifted to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.
"From what I understand, (he is) a very lucky boy. Everything that was done was done as a precaution," said Dennis Demes, a shift supervisor for the Pingree Grove Fire Protection District.
"He was awake and talking to us and answering our questions and not crying or anything. He had some scratches."
Demes said authorities were called shortly after noon to a house in the 1100 block of Capulet Circle in the Montague Forest subdivision. When firefighters arrived, the boy was inside the home being tended to by his parents, Demes said.
It is unknown how the boy, who told paramedics it was his birthday, fell out of the window. Bushes broke his fall, Demes said.
However, a woman who said she was boy's aunt wrote in an e-mail to the Daily Herald that the toddler was playing and leaned up against a screen, which later gave way.
The woman did not respond to a request for a phone interview.
A hospital spokeswoman declined to comment on the boy's condition.
Demes said both the boy's parents were home at the time.
Officials from the Kane County Sheriff's Department responded to the scene. Lt. Patrick Gengler, the department's spokesman, could not immediately be reached for comment.
