Goose on the Loose fest in Libertyville

If you're looking for something fun to do on Saturday, take a gander at the sky and head toward the giant goose.

The Liberty Sunrise Rotary Club's annual Goose is Loose festival will run from 3 to 10:30 p.m. at the Libertyville Sports Complex, located at Route 45 and Peterson Road. It should be easy to find: Just look for the 40-foot helium balloon in the shape of a goose.

Organizers say the free event has something for everyone, starting with activities for children at 3 p.m. Music will begin at 5 p.m. and fireworks are set for 8:30 p.m.

The highlight of the event, though, is the Goose Drop, in which numbered paper geese, fitted with tiny parachutes, are tossed from a 120-foot lift to see which will land closest to the target. The winning goose is worth $35,000.

You can buy a goose for $50 each, or five for $200. Tickets can be purchased at goosedropping.com or at the event before 6 p.m. The drop will take place at 6:30 p.m.

The event is the main fundraiser for the Rotary Club, which uses the money to help dozens of local organizations. Last year the Rotary Club sold 2,500 raffle tickets and raised $60,000 for local charities.
