Accused high school band director resigns

ALTON -- A southwestern Illinois band director accused of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old student has stepped down from his post.

The Alton school district on Tuesday night unanimously accepted the resignation of 36-year-old Matthew Lang of Godfrey.

Madison County prosecutors last week charged Lang with criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

That came two days after sheriff's investigators say they began investigating after hearing that Lang might have had inappropriate relations with a girl at Alton High School.

Authorities say they later confirmed Lang had sex with the student more than once at school during school hours.

Lang is jailed on $250,000 bond.
