Cubs shuffle rotation

The Cubs made one addition to their starting rotation Monday night in San Diego, and there will be more changes this week.

Ted Lilly came off the disabled list to stat Monday. To make room, the Cubs sent right-handed reliever Justin Berg to Class AAA Iowa. Berg made his big-league debut last week and worked 2 scoreless innings against the Phillies.

Ryan Dempster pitches Tuesday night, and Rich Harden will go in Wednesday's finale. Tom Gorzelanny will open Thursday at L.A. against the Dodgers, with Randy Wells going Friday.

Originally, Wells was supposed to start Wednesday. Harden missed his start Sunday because of the rainout at Wrigley Field, and it was uncertain when he would start again.

Harden sounded disappointed Sunday and indicated he'd rather pitch sooner than later.

Manager Lou Piniella said on his WGN radio pregame show that this latest switch should benefit both pitchers. The Cubs have kept an eye on rookie Wells' workload, and Piniella figured the extra rest would help him.

Theriot still out: Shortstop Ryan Theriot remained home in Chicago on Monday as he hoped to finish a battle with a stomach virus. Lou Piniella told reporters in San Diego that Theriot should be able to rejoin the team Tuesday. Aaron Miles started at shortstop Monday.

Piniella told cubs.com that Jeff Baker will get the lion's share of playing time at second base. Baker had a seven-game hitting streak entering Monday, going 14-for-28. He supplants Mike Fontenot, who has had a rough year at the plate although he did start Monday.
