Hot times at South Elgin's Riverfest Express celebration
Hot and humid August weather arrived this weekend, heating up South Elgin's Riverfest Express in the process.
The 13th annual event, held in Panton Mill Park near village hall at Water and State streets, drew new and repeat revelers Saturday afternoon.
Eric Jaen of Elgin was just driving by when he decided to take his kids, Josalee, 6, and Joshua, 3, for some food and rides.
"We'll have some fun out here," the elder Jaen said as he munched on a frozen banana. He said he would take the youngsters on a few rides, but "nothing too scary for them."
In addition to the carnival, food court and live music, residents also perused a small business expo.
For South Elgin resident Janis Swanson, hitting the craft show is a yearly event with her friends Sandy Haberstich and Sue Jones, both of Elgin.
"I normally come every year to look around," Swanson said.
Added Haberstich: "There's always something going on."
The heat also enticed more people to stop into the air-conditioned display by the Valley Model Railroad Club, a South Elgin-based group that is celebrating its 60th anniversary.
"We like to be part of Riverfest. This is a chance for us to show off a bit," club President Roger Taylor said.
The group also has an open house planned for November. At the display, kids could control a small "Thomas the Tank Engine" train set and receive a certificate.
The festival continues from noon to 10 p.m. today.
Some highlights are "Village Idol" from noon to 2 p.m., a car show from noon to 4 p.m. and fireworks at 9:30 p.m.
