Wheeling police hold hearing:

A public hearing, part of the Wheeling Police Department's reaccreditation process with the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, will be held at 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 17, at Wheeling Village Hall, 2 Community Blvd. For accreditation, police departments must show they comply with state-of-the-art standards in policy and procedure, administration, operations and support services. Police employees and members of the community can comment three ways: at the hearing; by phone 1-3 p.m. Aug. 17 at (847) 459-2616 or in writing to CALEA, 10302 Eaton Place, Suite 100, Fairfax, VA, 22030-2215. Comments must specifically address the department's compliance with CALEA standards (a copy of the standards manual is at the Wheeling Police Department) and verbal comments have a 10-minute limit. Hoffman Estates recycling:

Hoffman Estates residents wanting to recycle old electronics, latex paint, light bulbs and prescription drugs can do so 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at the Susan H. Kenley-Rupnow Public Works Complex at 2305 Pembroke Ave. The recylcing event is free, but proof of Hoffman Estates residency is required. For information go to hoffmanestates.org/green.

Deer Park Hampton Inn opens:

A 104-room Hampton Inn & Suites has opened at 21660 W. Lake-Cook Road in Deer Park, owned by Atira Hotels and operated by JHM Hotels. Minutes from the Deer Park Town Center, amenities include a complimentary breakfast, shuttle and business center. Hampton, which includes Hampton Inn, Hampton by Hilton and Hampton Inn & Suites hotels, is a mid-priced hotel and part of Hilton Hotels Corp., with more than 3,000 hotels and 500,000 rooms in 74 countries and territories.

Palatine to fill sidewalk gaps:

The Palatine village council approved a $62,982 contract with Skokie-based Schroeder & Schroeder Inc. to construct sidewalks along parts of two major corridors. The project will fill in gaps between Deer Avenue and Countryside Drive along the east side of Northwest Highway, as well as parts of Rand Road between Winslowe Drive and Dundee Road. Construction is set to begin in September and the contract calls for most of the work to be completed by winter.
