Carol Stream narrows sites for rec center

Carol Stream Park District officials have narrowed their list of potential sites for a possible recreation center and are seeking public input to help with their decision.

The district has been conducting forums and surveys since last year to discuss the possibility of building a new center and indoor pool.

Officials say they believe they can refinance their debt at lower interest rates to pay for the new structure and general improvements to parks.

The budget for the projects tentatively is set at $20 million to $30 million, all with no increase in taxes. No formal decision has been made to go forward with the plans.

An open house will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 20 at the Town Center, 1021 Fountain View Drive, to collect more responses from residents about what they want to see in the park district.

"We want to get more specific feedback: What are some of the amenities people really want? What shape is the pool going to be?" said Julie Vogl, director of marketing services for the district.

One of the questions will center around the sites to replace the Aldrin Community Center in Armstrong Park. Because it was built to serve a much smaller population and is in a flood plain, the existing center has become obsolete.

The pool at Armstrong Park also was closed and Vogl said residents have been asking for another indoor option.

The district is expected to have a list of potential rec center sites available by as early as today.

People also have asked for trails to connect parks and for outdoor lights, but Vogl said those requests need to be narrowed down to more specific plans.

The district also will have pictures and results from past forums and surveys, along with some tentative plans available at the open house.

Another hearing will be held in September and a steering committee will then make a presentation to the park district board on future plans. Decisions on moving forward on a referendum to issue a capital bond will be made by the end of the year.
