Red Stars' Tarpley to have ACL surgery to fix tear

It wasn't how Chicago forward Lindsay Tarpley's wanted to end her initial WPS season.

In the last five minutes of the final training session last Tuesday in St. Louis with her Chicago Red Stars teammate, Tarpley tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee.

Now Tarpley, a U.S. National Team member, will undergo surgery.

In a release issued Monday, team officials said MRI tests revealed the injury's severity, and that the team's physician, Dr. Preston Wolin, said he is optimistic about her return for the beginning of the 2010 season.

A date for the surgery has not been determined.

"Lindsay's injury is not complicated and she will work hard to rehabilitate in the off season in preparation for 2010," said head trainer Laura Behr of the Red Stars.
