AARP offers seniors driver safety class
Henry Karolus will teach an AARP Drivers Safety Program class from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, and Wednesday, Aug. 12, at the West Dundee Safety Center 2, 100 Carrington Drive. You must attend both days. Cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for nonmembers, due on the first day. Check should be made out to AARP. Call (847) 426-4504 to register. The class is open to anyone 50 or older. The class may make you a safer driver and possibly give you a savings on the liability portion of your insurance.
Shrine Club to host ice cream social
The Elgin Shrine Club will hold its 41st annual ice cream social from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, at the west pavilion in Trout Park, off Route 25, south of I-90 in Elgin. It will be held rain or shine. Admission is $2 per person. The Elgin police and fire departments will display some of their latest equipment. For the enjoyment of the children, the clowns from Medinah Temple will be there. Proceeds will be forwarded directly to the Shriner's Hospital for Children in Chicago helping the hospital with its more than $18 million dollar annual budget. The operating budget for the 22 Shriner's hospitals throughout the nation, as well as Canada and Mexico, is over $1.5 million a day.
St. Mary to hold memorial Mass
A Memorial Mass for Deceased Children will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 10307 Dundee Road, Huntley. If you have lost a child through miscarriage, stillbirth, prematurity, illness, accident or any other way, they welcome you to gather with them to remember these special children with a Memorial Mass. The celebrant will be the Rev. Steve Knox. This Mass is intended for anyone who has lost a child recently or in the past. They also invite family and friends who support those who have lost a child.
Hampshire church hosts golf outing
St. Charles Borromeo Church in Hampshire will host its annual Golf Challenge, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, Sunday, Aug. 30, at the Marengo Ridge Golf Course, 9106 Harmony Hill Road. Sign-in is at 12:30, with shotgun start at 1 p.m. Cart, 18 holes of golf, practice balls and dinner $90 per person. Buffet-only tickets $20 per person. Proceeds will be used to help with medical expenses for Andrew and Jessica Holzkamp, Elliana Ward and Max Weber.
Sign up for school at Good Shepherd
Good Shepherd Lutheran School will hold registration from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, at its 1111 Van St. location in Elgin. Church membership is not required. The school will offer kindergarten to fifth grade for the 2009-10 school year, with an all-day kindergarten. Sign up now and receive $50 off your registration fee.
