New elephant makes herself at home at Brookfield Zoo

Brookfield Zoo has a new elephant.

On Monday, a 26-year-old African elephant named Joyce joined 28-year-old elephant Christy at the suburban zoo. Joyce arrived at the zoo on Sunday evening after a 3-day trip from her previous home of five years at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo, Calif.

The new elephant is 8-feet tall and weighs 6,800 pounds. Zoo officials say their elephant keepers are monitoring and supervising the two elephants as they are introduced to one another.

Brookfield Zoo lost 39-year-old female African elephant Affie when she died in May.
