Woman charged in Waukegan stabbing
A Waukegan woman was ordered held on $50,000 bond Saturday after being charged with stabbing another woman outside a bar.
Lake County Assistant State's Attorney John Brown said Shauntiah Grasten, 24, of the 2300 block of Horeb Ave., faces up to seven years in prison if convicted of aggravated battery with a weapon.
Brown said a 23-year-old North Chicago woman was leaving The Cove nightclub on Yorkhouse Road in Waukegan around 1:15 a.m. Saturday and was on her way to her car in the parking lot.
The woman was attacked by someone who stabbed her several times in the back and hit her in the back of the head with an object, Brown said.
When police arrived, Brown said several people pointed at Grasten who was among the crowd standing in the parking lot near the scene of the attack.
As officers approached her, Brown said, they heard the sound of metal hitting the pavement and discovered a bloody steak knife in the area of Grasten's feet.
Grasten, who suffered wounds to her hands and arms, claimed she acted in self-defense, Brown said.
The victim required eight stitches to her back and a number of staples to close her head wound, Brown said, and Grasten was treated and released from a hospital.
Associate Judge Michael Betar ordered Grasten to appear in court again Aug. 21.
