Hanover Park man charged with identity theft

A Hanover Park man was charged Saturday with stealing another man's identity to obtain work, phones and cable television service totaling about $9,700.

Vicente Alejandre, 26, of the 2300 block of Glendale Terrace, faces a charge of felony identity theft after an investigation launched when the victim was contacted by the IRS for owing back taxes from landscaping job he never worked.

The victim contacted the landscaping company's owner and they discovered his Social Security number was associated with one of the employees, said Assistant Cook County State's Attorney Adam Klugman.

An investigation revealed that Alejandre gained employment in 2007 using the victim's Social Security number, then used the same number to obtain mobile phone contracts and cable TV services, Klugman said.

Cook County Circuit Court Judge Kay Hanlon ordered a $30,000 bond and continued the case to Monday.
