Tway leads Western Amateur as third round begins today
Kevin Tway kept up his solid play in the 107th Western Amateur at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest on Wednesday, posting a 2-under-par 69 to take the 36-hole lead at 6-under 136 heading into today's 36-hole marathon.
Tway, a junior at Oklahoma State, held a one-shot advantage over fellow Big 12 Conference star Andrea Pavan, an incoming senior with 2009 NCAA champion Texas A&M, and Illinois sophomore Luke Guthrie, who moved in front of his Fighting Illini teammate and first-round co-leader Zach Barlow.
"I just hit a lot of fairways and a lot of greens," said Tway, 21, of Edmond, Oklahoma. "I haven't played too well this summer, but I'm getting better each week. Last week, I practiced hard, and so far it's paying off."
Tway dropped in three birdie putts on his first eight holes, including a 40-footer on the 600-yard, par 5 8th that moved him to 7-under for the championship. He dropped a stroke over the final 10 holes, finishing with two bogeys, a birdie and seven pars.
With 36 holes to play on Thursday before the field is cut to the 2009 Western Amateur's "Sweet 16" qualifiers, Tway, the son of long-time PGA Tour pro Bob Tway, knows he'll need to stay focused.
"There's still two more rounds. It's going to be a long day," he said.
Joining Tway atop the leader board were Pavan and Guthrie at 5- under 137, and Byeong-Hun An, of Seoul, Korea, at 4-under 138. Guthrie moved two shots in front of fellow Illini and first-round co-leader Zach Barlow.
"He upped me yesterday, and I upped him today," said Guthrie. "It's fun to have a teammate playing well, too."
Forty-eight players made the 36-hole cut at 5-under 147 or better. Following Thursday's cut, the low 16 advance to match play starting at 8 a.m. Friday morning. The championship match is set for 1 p.m. Saturday.
Admission is $10 for adults, with ages 18 and under admitted free. Parking is complimentary.
