Elk Grove Village man charged with trying to run over cop on tollway

A man who led Chicago police on a high-speed chase on the Jane Addams Tollway last month that ultimately ended in Elgin with an officer shooting him, has been charged for using his vehicle to hit another officer, the Kane County State's Attorney's office said today.

Andrzej Wojtkielewicz, 21, of the 900 block of Tennessee Lane in Elk Grove Village, faces a single count of aggravated battery to a police officer, a Class 2 felony.

His bail was set at $1 million and he remains in custody at the Kane County Judicial Center.

The charge is the result of a July 14 pursuit that took the Chicago Police Department roughly 30 miles out its jurisdiction.

Officers from the city's Grand Central District at 8:57 p.m. were in the middle of a drug investigation and activated their lights and sirens to pull Wojtkielewicz over. Authorities say he was involved in a Chicago drug transaction.

But the SUV instead entered I-90 in Chicago and kept heading west, taking police through several municipalities.

Officers finally stopped Wojtkielewicz at I-90 and Route 31 by the Elgin toll plaza and told him to get out of the vehicle.

He instead used it to hit one of the officers, police said. And the officer's partner fired his gun, hitting Wojtkielewicz in the chest, police said.

Officers recovered the drugs and Wojtkielewicz recuperated from his injury at Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin, police said.

He was arrested last Friday and appeared in bond court the following day.

His next court date is 1:30 p.m. Monday in courtroom 217 in front of Associate Judge James C. Hallock.

If convicted of the felony charge, Wojtkielewicz faces between three and seven years in prison or up to four years probation.
