Who's doing the profiling?

According to Harvard University Professor Henry Louis Gates, Cambridge Police Sgt. James Crowley "... clearly was a rogue policeman." According to President Obama, the police "... acted stupidly" in arresting a prominent black scholar for disorderly conduct.

Did either of these two men have the facts/knowledge of the situation to make such accusations?

So, who was being profiled here, the professor or the officer?
