Family plan key for Peavy; it was no routine deal

As he was flying to Chicago on Saturday morning and meeting his new teammates, additional details emerged from the Jake Peavy trade.

Suffice to say, it wasn't a routine deal.

Peavy is married and has three sons, and during Saturday's press conference at U.S. Cellular Field, the 28-year-old pitcher stressed the importance of his family.

According to a report in the San Diego Union-Tribune, Peavy waived his no-trade clause only after the White Sox agreed to a "six-figure" deal that includes 6-8 family trips to Chicago per year and a home large enough for the Peavys.

Peavy said the travel and home perks were "potential deal breakers."

Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf wasn't even informed of the potential move until 1:30 p.m. Friday, just 90 minutes before the nonwaiver trade deadline.

"(General manager Kenny Williams) sent me an e-mail and said, 'Do you want Jake Peavy?' and I replied, 'No, thank you,'" Reinsdorf told host Chuck Swirsky on radio station ESPN 1000 Friday night. "I said, 'But I'm always willing to talk.' He and (assistant general manager) Rick Hahn came in and they talked me into it. That's how it went down."

Reinsdorf wasn't crazy about the $48 million Peavy is due over the next three seasons, not to mention a potential $22 million salary (or $4 million buyout) in 2013.

But after some coaxing from Williams, Reinsdorf relented.

"It really sets us up for the future with (Mark) Buehrle, (John) Danks, (Gavin) Floyd and Peavy," Reinsdorf said. "That's as good a four starters as you'll see in baseball, and I'm sure we will go out and get a fifth starter. Then, this year, if we can get to the playoffs, the playoffs are all about pitching."

Happy ending: After surviving a bout with kidney stones, Sox closer Bobby Jenks was back on the mound Saturday.

Jenks, who blew saves in each of his last two outings and allowed 7 earned runs over his last 62/3 innings, retired the Yankees in order.

Jenks last pitched July 25.

My bad: Gordon Beckham forgot how many outs there were in the eighth inning Saturday and was tagged out by Alex Rodriguez at third base.

"That's me being an idiot," Beckham said. "It'll happen every once in a while, hopefully not for the rest of the season."

Ramirez update: Alexei Ramirez (sprained right ankle) missed his third straight game Saturday, and manager Ozzie Guillen said the shortstop is now due back on Wednesday.

Sox call Nunez: A roster spot opened Friday when Clayton Richard headed to San Diego in the Jake Peavy trade.

The White Sox filled it before Saturday's game against the Yankees, bringing up relief pitcher Jhonny Nunez from Class AAA Charlotte.

Nunez was acquired from the Yankees during the off-season in the Nick Swisher trade.

The 23-year-old right-hander was had a 3.65 ERA in 7 appearances with Charlotte. Nunez opened the season at Class AA Birmingham and was 3-0 with a 2.14 ERA in 26 outings.

"We liked Nunez in spring training and hopefully he can help us," manager Ozzie Guillen said.
