North Aurora pet parade promises doggone good time

This weekend North Aurora will be going to the dogs, but in a good way.

On Sunday the 27th annual North Aurora Days Pet Parade will march down Route 31 to North Island Park. Pets and owners are encouraged to dress up to win one of 26 different trophies as well.

The parade is free to enter and will kick off at 1 p.m. and will begin at the corner of Route 31 and State Street. All participants must be registered by Friday at 6 p.m. Owners can register their pets in person at the Fox Valley Veterinary Clinic at 405 Oak St. or call the clinic at (630) 896-6664 and register over the phone.

The parade is open to all different kinds of pets, provided they are leashed or caged. The first 100 entrants will receive a goody bag filled with treats for pets and humans alike.

Owners can dress their pets up and strut their stuff in one of 16 different judging categories. In total, trophies will be awarded to winners in categories like "The Incredible Bulk" and "Most Unique Pet/Owner Costume."

In addition, 10 wild card trophies will also be awarded to participants whose outfits may not fit a specific category, but still really wow the panel of 13 judges.

According to Fox Valley Veterinary Clinic veterinarian and parade coordinator Dr. Thomas Brooks, the parade and judging contest are open to "kids of all ages - and that means adults too."

For those who are doggone determined to get a prize, Brooks advises a little creativity is likely to go a long way.

"We really think that imagination should be rewarded and if people can think up something clever and make it fun for kids too then it's a success," Brooks said.

After the parade an obedience demonstration will be held at North Island Park, 14 E State St.
