Naperville mom sentenced for leaving kids home alone

A Naperville mother whose three children were home alone when a fire broke out was ordered Wednesday to undergo parenting classes.

Latangie L. Young, 28, also was placed on one-year court supervision for endangering the life of a child. She pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor offense July 1.

Police arrested Young after the fire erupted at 7 a.m. Jan. 10 in her apartment on the 100 block of Testa Drive, where her kids, ages 10, 7 and 1-month, were home alone as the mother worked in Niles.

The children were not hurt. The fire was set when the oldest child tried to make pancakes for breakfast, officials said. The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services stepped in afterward to monitor the children's well-being.

DuPage Associate Judge Jane Mitton sentenced Young, who showed remorse for leaving her children alone.
