Three businesses cited in Algonquin liquor sting
A surprise alcohol compliance check in Algonquin led to citations against three local businesses accused of selling alcohol to minors.
What's more, police on Thursday arrested a pair of men on charges they bought alcohol for a minor at a downtown tavern, Deputy Police Chief Steve Kuzynowski said.
David B. Glasscock, 23, of the 100 block of Park Street in Algonquin, and Michael D. Kluth, 25, of the 1000 block of Nottingham Lane in Crystal Lake, were each charged with delivery of alcohol to a minor, police said.
They were released on their signatures and are due in court Aug. 26 in Algonquin.
The July 22 sting operation included 17 establishments in all. Cited for selling to a minor were One Stop, 3989 W. Algonquin Road; the convenience store at the Phillips 66 gas station, 2390 E. Algonquin Road; and 7-Eleven, 1495 W. Algonquin Road, police said.
Officials did not know Tuesday whether any were repeat offenders.
The businesses' owners will have to appear at a later date before the village's liquor control commission to explain what happened, and how they'll prevent it in the future and face possible punishment.
Village President John Schmitt, who also serves as Algonquin's liquor control commissioner, said officials take the violations very seriously.
"We're fortunate that we have quite a few businesses that do serve, and we're fortunate we've had very few that have had any violations," Schmitt said. "But some people make mistakes, and when that happens, unfortunately, there's going to have to be a reckoning on it."
