Sorority president sued over $900,000 statue
Members of a Chicago-based sorority are suing to have the national president fired for spending thousands of dollars to buy a wax figure of herself and other personal items.
The lawsuit alleges that Alpha Kappa Alpha President Barbara McKinzie -- a former Chicago Housing Authority comptroller -- spent $900,000 on the wax figure. But an attorney for the firm representing the plaintiffs says she's since learned that amount is for wax figures of McKinzie and the sorority's first national president.
The lawsuit also alleges McKinzie spent AKA money on jewelry, lingerie and designer clothing. Also named in the lawsuit filed last month in Washington, D.C., are Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. and current and former board members.
McKinzie says she didn't do anything wrong. She says the sorority board approved the $900,000 to pay for 2010 convention expenses and that the two wax figures only cost $45,000.
