Glen Ellyn seeks video poker feedback

Glen Ellyn trustees want to make sure they've done their research when they make a final decision on whether to allow video poker machines in town.

The state recently passed a law that allows the machines at restaurants with liquor licenses; it's up to individual towns to decide whether to permit the gambling devices. The village board is seeking input from residents and businesses on the issue.

The board likely will make a decision by the end of the year, before the state law goes into effect Jan. 1.

Attorney Stuart Diamond said trustees have to consider that the cash-strapped village will not receive any revenue if they decide against video poker.

The board also wants to hear from businesses to see if anyone would be interested in the state program.

"I think that's a really important factor," Diamond said.

Board members didn't express their opinions Monday, but did outline what information they want. They asked staff to look at how many businesses would qualify for the machines and how much revenue it would mean for Glen Ellyn.

Trustee Carl Henninger said it's important to consider the cost of extra law enforcement if that's deemed necessary for locations with the machines.

Trustee Phil Hartweg said he also wants to work with state legislators to ensure the money promised by the machines would actually come back to municipalities. Michelle Thorsell said she wants to get input from other states that have allowed poker machines.

Anyone interested in giving feedback should contact the village at (630) 469-5000 or visit glenellyn.org.
