DuPage County briefs
Naperville eyes Metra access:
Naperville's project to improve access at the Route 59 Metra station will begin by early August, officials said Wednesday. The work includes replacing the existing concrete stairs with concrete sidewalks, ADA upgrades and resurfacing. Access to the train platform will be maintained at all times, but alternate pedestrian routes may be required on a temporary basis. In addition, the Kiss-n-Ride drop-off will be temporarily relocated. The improvements are slated for completion in September. A map detailing the work zone and alternate routes, as well as the project schedule, is available at www.naperville.il.us/route59stationimprovements.aspx.
Naperville probes burglary:
Naperville police are searching for a burglar who broke into a concession stand last week at White Eagle Golf Club, 3400 Club Drive, and stole about $275 worth of alcohol, cigarettes and candy. Some of the items were recovered the following morning under a tree near the 9th green. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (630) 420-6006.
Cardboard boat race on:
Aurora area residents might want to get a crew together to build their entry in the Fox Valley United Way's seventh annual What Floats Your Boat Cardboard Boat Race. The race takes place Aug. 22 on Mastodon Lake in Aurora's Phillips Park. The boats compete in one of five divisions - junior, adult, business, nonprofit and community. First-, second- and third-place trophies are awarded in each division. The race raises funds for the support Fox Valley United Way provides to more than 50 social service agencies. Registration information and rules, along with suggestions for building a cardboard boat, are available at uwfoxvalley.org.
Easter Seals gets donation:
Two local Easter Seals affiliates - DuPage and the Fox Valley Region and Easter Seals Metropolitan Chicago - will receive a $26,000 check from Chicago Sweet Tomatoes restaurants at 10 a.m. July 31 at Lombard Sweet Tomatoes, 2820 Highland Ave. The money was raised from the sale of thousands of the restaurants' homemade chocolate chip cookies in June. The cookies sold for $1.99 and all proceeds went to local Easter Seals affiliates.
