No sympathy for tickets on right turns
Several times each week I walk to complete various errands in and around Central Naperville. As a frequent pedestrian, I have no sympathy for drivers who get ticketed turning right on red without stopping.
It has been my experience that the overwhelming majority of drivers check for car traffic by looking left, and never check for pedestrians on the right who want to cross on the green light. And most of those drivers are talking on the phone. As a result, I do not cross unless the driver has come to a complete stop and has waved me on, and I have drilled this procedure into my kids' heads.
By the way, there is a small fortune in tickets to be made at the corner of Gartner and Catalpa in Naperville, where drivers zip by pedestrians waiting to cross at a clearly marked crosswalk. Perhaps if people walked more often we might become more polite drivers.
