Berlin Airlift examined in Des Plaines Rotary program

The Cold War History Educational Project and the Des Plaines Rotary Club invite residents to a special presentation at 12:15 p.m. on Thursday, July 30, at the Golf Center of Des Plaines, 353 N. River Road.

The program is being held in the Club Casa Cafe second floor banquet hall.

The program marks the 60th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift, from June 1948 to May 1949: "The Miracle of Berlin - When the Nations United."

Guest speak is Baerbel A. Simon, who is with the Cold War Museum, Berlin chapter. He will give a Power Point presentation with a Q&A to follow.

His presentation will cover the timeline of events, the liberation and occupation of Germany and Berlin, Churchill's warning of an "Iron Curtain", the Marshall Plan, how the airlift began and what its effect was, and what the U.S.'s contributions were.

Donations to the Cold War History Educational Project will be accepted.
