Huntley mom charged with abducting daughter, may be in India
Huntley police issued an arrest warrant this week for a 26-year-old resident accused of abducting her 2-year-old daughter and possibly taking the child to her native India without her father's knowledge.
Anandamayee Nandanoore, 26, of the 9100 block of Durham Drive, faces a felony child abduction charge alleging she took the girl, Devishi Nandanoore, at least 15 days ago and has made no contact with her husband since.
"We have reason to believe they are in India, but we have no idea what her intentions are," Huntley Deputy Police Chief Todd Fulton said today. "Indications are she is not planning on coming back."
Huntley Police immediately involved the FBI and the National Center for Missing or Exploited Children in the case because of the possibility the child has been taken abroad, Fulton said.
The girl, police said, is not believed to be in any physical danger.
Her father, Rupesh Nandanoore, first contacted police about his daughter's whereabouts July 10, nine days after he obtained an order of protection against his wife. In a petition seeking the protective order, he claimed that his wife previously "kidnapped" the girl - a U.S. citizen - to India earlier this year and brought her home, but was threatening to again remove her from the country.
The petition also claims Anandamayee Nandanoore was physically abusive to her husband and members of her family had threatened to kill him if he traveled to India. Anandamayee Nandanoore never received paperwork notifying her of the order of protection, Huntley police said.
She also had an order of protection against her husband, claiming in an April court filing that he was abusive toward her and had threatened to kidnap their daughter on other occasions. That protective order expired Thursday, police said.
The charge against Anandamayee Nandanoore is a Class 4 felony punishable by a maximum one to three years in prison. If she returns to the United States and is arrested, she will have to post a $10,000 bond to go free while awaiting trial.
The case marks the second time in less than a month that authorities in McHenry County have charged a foreign-born mother of taking her children out of the country without their father's permission and with no apparent plans to return.
Sonia Leon de Carol, 43, of Cary, faces a child abduction charge alleging she took her 5-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son to her native Mexico last month and is not planning to return. The children's father has had no contact with either of them since June 4.
