Elgin Post 57 rolls into district tourney
The Elgin American Legion Post 57 baseball team claimed the Kane County championship over the weekend, beating St. Charles in two of three games.
After losing the series opener 12-5, Post 57 came back to earn a apir of 6-4 wins and the county title for the first time since 2002.
In the championship game, Jon Meidel was the winning pitcher and had a double and 2 RBI. Justin Kalusa also had a double and an RBI while Zach Crinigan, Jake Kane and Tyler Shore each contributed doubles as well.
George Heller picked up the save.
In the earlier 6-4 win, Tom Roth picked up the victory on the hill for Elgin while Meidel was the offensive star with a double and a grand slam home run. Shore also drove in a run.
Elgin (23-4) will face Crystal Lake today at 4:30 p.m. at Crystal Lake Central High School in the district tournament.
Pierce all-American: South Elgin softball standout Kim Pierce, the honorary captain of the Daily Herald's All-Area team, has been named a North Region All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Pierce, who is signed with Indiana State University, was selected as a utility player. South Elgin's Lauren Vitiello was also selected as an at-large/1B all-American for the North Region. Buffalo Grove outfielder Andrea DiPrima was the only other Illinois player recognized on the first team. New Trier pitcher Kelsey Lee, Barrington pitcher Kim Cygan, Trinity second baseman Laura Eichenold, Buffalo Grove outfielder KC Dunne, Plainfield South outfielder Olivia Bell, Andrew outfielder Brooke McDermott and Benet pitcher Meghan Eastman were recognized on the second team.
