Shocking news: Fowl play in Wyoming

Even though we're far from this incident, the news coming from the west is startling.

PacifiCorp, one of the largest electric utilities in the West, pleaded guilty this week in Federal court in Casper, Wyo., to unlawfully killing golden eagles and other migratory birds in the state.

The company, which does business in Wyoming as Rocky Mountain Power, was ordered to pay more than $10.5 million for killing eagles and other protected birds.

The cold truth: All you Florida snowbirds, get ready to get out your wallets again.

Florida's new shoreline fishing license requirement takes effect Aug. 1. Resident anglers who fish for saltwater species from shore or a structure affixed to shore must have a $9 shoreline fishing license or a $17 regular saltwater fishing license.

Fishing report: Excellent area angling going on right now.

Fox Chain: As predicted, the muskie bite on the Chain's northernmost lakes is gaining steam. Look to Channel Lake and Lake Catherine for some exciting moments, while Bluff Lake muskies are surprising panfishermen.

If you play your cards right, you may happen across the decent-sized school of walleyes on Petite Lake, but the bite mainly has been experienced by evening anglers.

Fox River: Even though the added rainfall has deterred some, one still can find smallmouth bass hanging on weed edges not far from shorelines around Algonquin and South Elgin.

Lake Michigan: Coho and steelhead doing very well off Montrose and Belmont. To the north, out of Northpoint, anglers are finding kings, coho and steelhead in the 45- to 75-foot range.
