Terry Moran day returns Saturday

The 15th annual Terry Moran Family Day and Softball Tournament will take place on Saturday, July 18, in Rolling Meadows.

In 1995, Terry Moran was a leader in the area's softball community, with an athletic ability and amiability that attracted friends easily. But he was killed in a car accident that winter at age 36, leaving behind a wife and baby.

Desiring to honor his memory, the Morans, led by Terry's younger brother Steve, set up the first Terry Moran Memorial Softball Tournament the next July.

His family also established a foundation to raise funds for the fight against juvenile diabetes, a disease the brothers' nephew had been diagnosed with.

This year's men's, women's, coed - more than 50 softball teams - will play all day on July 18, with the championships games being played at either 4 or 7 p.m.

This year's Family Day at Kimball Hill Park will start at 11 a.m. Besides softball, there will be hayrides, a moonwalk and prize giveaways. There also will be live entertainment, food and a beer garden. Bands include British Export at 6 p.m. and New Invaders at 8 p.m.

Family Day will run until 10 p.m. Admission is free.
