Shots fired at undercover Aurora cops
Three undercover Aurora police officers were fired upon Monday night but were not injured, authorities said Tuesday.
The officers were traveling east on the 1100 block of Kane Street in an unmarked vehicle checking the area for narcotics or gang activity.
They were approached by another vehicle about 11:15 p.m. and shots were fired at the officers. Although the police vehicle was struck by the gunfire, the officers were not injured. They did not return fire.
The other vehicle fled and could not be located during a search of the area.
Police are not releasing details on the other vehicle or how many shots were fired because they believe the incident to be gang-related.
"Typically there's probability that once those with street-gang ties learn a police squad car was shot up people are trying to come forward to take credit for it and in order to separate good leads from false information we need to hold that close to the vest," spokesman Dan Ferrelli said.
Officers canvassed the neighborhood after the shooting but "got little useful information," he said. There were no video cameras running in the undercover car.
The officers are investigators with the police department's Special Operations Group that investigates gang and drug crimes.
