Experts to testify about clout at U of I

College admissions experts are expected to testify before the commission investigating how politically connected students got into the University of Illinois over more qualified applicants.

So far, some of the university's top officials, including Chancellor Richard Herman, have testified before the commission which is due to issue a report next month.

Herman has said that the clout list, dubbed "Category I" by university officials, has existed for decades. He has said it was set up to track applicants who were recommended by lawmakers and donors, among others.

After the Chicago Tribune reported on the "Category I" list in May, the university suspended its use. President Joseph White has said he'll cooperate with the investigation.
