America should "stand back" in Iran
It appears that some Americans and some Republicans have forgotten our own American history. The battles for women's suffrage and civil rights saw civil disobedience in our streets, peaceful and not so peaceful. Our government authorities arrested, mistreated and imprisoned demonstrators as they brought these causes to the attention of the general public and the front pages of our newspapers. No other country interfered in our domestic unrest. We would not have wanted any other country to step in to help quell even the most violent episodes.
Today in Iran, a profound change is occurring in their government and politics. There was an election - certainly, it was "fixed" so that the one anointed by the theocracy would be the victor. The people know the facts; and they are prepared to do what it takes for their cause. The American government and its politicians must stand back. It's not for us to interfere any further than to express our hope that the people will be heard by their government, and press for an end to the violence.
America must work with the government of Iran, no matter who is its president; it is the theocracy that is in charge. Taking a stand too firmly on one side in Iran's politics is harmful to the protesters and to our own interests.
