Man charged with giving nephew drugs that killed him
A McHenry County judge set bond at $1 million Friday for a 40-year-old Rockford man charged with supplying his nephew with the heroin that killed him.
Wade Smith, of the 1000 block of Chamberlain Street, faces one count of drug-induced homicide stemming from March fatal heroin overdose of 30-year-old Kendrick Vogt.
The charge culminates an investigation that began after Vogt was pronounced dead shortly after being found unresponsive in his Harvard-area apartment.
McHenry County Sheriff's Lt. Andrew Zinke said evidence and witness statements led authorities to Smith, who told investigators he purchased $100 of heroin in Rockford and gave some to his nephew. Smith also faces a less serious felony charge of possession of a controlled substance in connection with the incident.
Smith, who faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted, remains in custody at the McHenry County jail. He is scheduled to return to court July 20.
