"The John Barrymore Collection"
John Barrymore was considered one of finest actors of the silent era, when he went from matinee idol to Shakespearean actor. His image was altered, because before "Richard III" and "Hamlet" he was cast more for his good looks that his acting talent. The four films in the collection are "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," "Sherlock Holmes," "The Beloved Rogue" and "The Tempest."
"Garrison Keillor: The Man On The Radio In The Red Shoes"
Garrison Keillor began his radio variety show in 1974 in St. Paul, Minn. "A Prairie Home Companion" became a fixture on public radio stations, attracting more than 3 million listeners a week. In this fascinating documentary, Keillor takes his skits and monologues across the country. He has actors and musicians spin stories and sing songs about America. This was filmed over the course of more than one year, and is an intimate portrait of Keillor on and off the stage.
He mingles facts and fiction to create America's collective hometown, Lake Wobegon, on his radio program. He mixes storytelling and humor, and gives us reflections of ourselves.
He's been compared to Will Rogers and Mark Twain, and the program gives fans a chance to put faces to the voices on the radio. The extras include outtakes, Keillor speaking to college students in Georgia, an interview with Robert Altman and Keillor and filmmaker biography.
"Mr. Rock N Roll: The Alan Freed Story"
Alan Freed was a legendary Cleveland deejay who introduced his listeners to rhythm and blues music. It was very controversial at the time, because many considered r&b black music that should not be heard on white radio. Freed not only coined the term "rock 'n' roll," he played the music of Little Richard, Jackie Wilson, Bo Diddley, Frankie Lymon and other black performers.
Judd Nelson stars as Freed, and the story shows, warts and all, the contributions of a true pioneer who died in Palm Springs at the age of 43. The film captures the time perfectly, and you will feel that you are watching events as they really happened.
