Colon to start Thursday in Triple-A
Bartolo Colon has finally been located, and the injured starting pitcher is expected to be on the mound Thursday night for Class AAA Charlotte, according to a White Sox official.
Colon has been on the disabled for a month with a sore left knee. Before Wednesday, the Sox had no idea where the 36-year-old was.
Noting Colon is a huge fan of late pop star Michael Jackson, manager Ozzie Guillen had some fun trying to figure out his whereabouts.
"I worry about Colon because Colon was a big-time Michael Jackson fan," Guillen said. "He might see the TV and cry all day long. Maybe he is in L.A. at his funeral, because I can't find him."
Colon, 3-6 with a 4.23 ERA before going on the DL, is still collecting his $1 million salary from the White Sox.
But just like last season, when he bailed out on the Boston Red Sox, Colon's conduct has raised some questions.
"He's a grown man," Guillen said. "I only worry about the people in our clubhouse now. I guarantee it will bother (general manager) Kenny (Williams) and (chairman) Jerry (Reinsdorf) a bit."
Pena on board: A day after being acquired in a trade from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for minor-league first baseman Brandon Allen, relief pitcher Tony Pena joined the Sox before Wednesday night's game against the Indians.
The hard-throwing Pena, who is wearing No. 57, was 5-3 with a 4.24 ERA in 37 appearances with Arizona.
Since the Diamondbacks are already out of the NL West race, Pena wasn't surprised by the deal.
"In a way, yeah. I expected it," Pena said through an interpreter. "The past month there has been talk. I heard it on ESPN. I didn't really believe it, but here it is. It happened."
Pena said he's happy to be playing for a team with playoff aspirations.
"I'm excited to be with a team that is competing and in the mix like this," the right-hander said. "I just want to contribute. My main goal coming in right now is to work hard. I know (Octavio) Dotel, so I've been speaking with him and learning how the bullpen works."
Pena opened the season as the Diamondbacks' setup man, but he's likely to pitch middle relief with the White Sox.
Manager Ozzie Guillen said Pena can ease some of the workload D.J. Carrasco has been carrying.
"I think he will help us," Guillen said. "Like (Tuesday), and in the past, when Carrasco has to cover up two innings to keep us close. Now we can use Carrasco, then Pena, then the rest of the guys and make it easier because we need an arm we can count on and to hold those guys for the seventh, eighth and ninth."
In the fold: The White Sox and outfielder Jared Mitchell agreed to a minor-league contract Wednesday.
The 20-year-old Mitchell, who led LSU to the College World Series championship last month, was the Sox' first-round draft pick. He is scheduled to make his professional debut Thursday with Class A Kannapolis.
Mitchell received a $1.2 million signing bonus.
