St. Charles woman reaches out to unemployed

In the past 10 years, it's a rare wife indeed who can say she's never had to deal with her husband being out of work. With the days of company loyalty, job security and pension plans having gone the route of Fantasyland, it's common to see men and women lose or change jobs often.

After her husband recently lost his job, Kathleen Krispin of St. Charles had the idea of getting together with other ladies who had spouses looking for work.

The premise was simple: Women experiencing the same worries and concerns about a future without the husband's income in the mix could share ideas and thoughts.

"I'm still trying to organize it, but with the summer just starting, it didn't seem like a good time to do it," Krispin said of her gathering, which has the working title of the "Honey I'm Home" group.

Krispin would like to hear from women who may be interested in this concept so she can determine if future meetings can be held. She can be contacted at (630) 513-6565.

Plenty of Blizzards: It was a tough choice at the Geneva Dairy Queen. Did I want a new Blizzard called the Tag-Along with the popular Girl Scout cookie crumbled in with the ice cream? Or my usual favorite, the Chocolate Extreme? I picked the Tag-Along and ordered a medium size.

When the young man at the counter brought my order, I noticed how small the "medium" looked. My first thought? I figured maybe Dairy Queen was going to start cutting back on the huge portions Americans tend to consume, and I was fine with that.

I was enjoying the new Blizzard on a picnic table in the back of the store when the young man came out and said he had mistakenly given me a small, rather than medium. He offered me another small, and I solved my original dilemma by requesting a Chocolate Extreme.

It was a case of excellent customer service, and Geneva will remain my Dairy Queen of choice because of it.

Food fare at the fair: Funnel cakes and corn dogs would tend to give me a tummy ache, but they remain popular food items at the Kane County Fair, which opens next week.

The Kane County Farmer newspaper tells us that funnel cakes have been around since the Pennsylvania Dutch created them in 1879.

Corn dogs were invented around 1938 by a company called Pronto Pups. This novelty food item also has a National Day tied in with basketball, occurring in March during the NCAA men's tournament.

Support for caregivers: Another type of support group is one in which the members have a similar responsibility to tackle. Those who care for elderly people suffering from memory loss, dementia or Alzheimer's fall into that category.

It was good to hear that the United Methodist Church of Geneva is offering a support-group meeting from 1:30 to 3 p.m. the second and fourth Wednesdays of every month, starting July 29.
