Passengers rescued after barge, sailboat crash

PEORIA -- Seven sailboat passengers were pulled safely from the Illinois River after their boat collided with a barge and sank.

Sailboat captain Jack Ryan of Peoria says he saw the barge heading his way Monday afternoon and thought he'd safely miss the large vessel. But Ryan says the wind shifted and his boat sailed back toward the barge.

The vessels ran into each other near a marina in Peoria.

Ryan and one other passenger had minor injuries.

Other boats on the river pulled all seven passengers from the water.

Peoria Fire Department Battalion Chief Mike Morrow says divers will try to find the sunken sailboat and mark it to warn other boats to stay clear.
