Safe Haven law can work
On June 19th, a newborn baby boy was found abandoned in Wheaton. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Fortunately, at least the baby is going to survive.
There was a lot of media attention given to this story including the mother being found and arrested. The consequence of people talking about the Safe Haven law has now resulted in a happy story. Another parent did trust and use that law. Today a newborn baby was turned in under the Safe Haven law.
Today that parent will not be tracked down and arrested.
Today this newborn baby will be placed with a loving family who will cherish and adopt this baby.
This is the "happily ever after story."
This is how it should be and would be if everyone new this safe, legal option was available.
The law says parents can turn in an unharmed newborn, seven days old or younger, to a staff member at a hospital, emergency medical facility or a staffed police station or fire station.
They can walk away with no questions asked.
