Golf tournament honors banker
The 46th annual Little City Invitational Golf Tournament on Monday, Aug. 24 will honor banking executive Larry Richman, a resident of Arlington Heights. Richman, the CEO of Chicago-based PrivateBancorp Inc., will receive the Morrie Kellman Humanitarian Award, named after the founder of the Little City tournament. "Larry has always been a great supporter of Little City and other charitable organizations throughout Chicago, and he is very deserving of the Kellman Humanitarian Award. Our committee unanimously selected Larry," said Ed Hockfield, one of the chairs for the tournament. A field of 250 golfers is expected to tee up on the 36-hole Twin Orchard Country Club in Long Grove. The event also includes an awards dinner, silent auction and a live auction for several golf packages. The goal is to top $400,000, an amount nearly reached last year. Safety concerns prompt weight room relocation
Concerns over an unsafe and unhealthy environment led Warren Township High School board members to recently approve a principal's request to have a weight area moved at the O'Plaine Road campus in Gurnee for freshmen and sophomores. O'Plaine Principal Jeff Brierton wrote in a memo that the weight facility used by student athletes and physical education classes is crowded and has poor ventilation. He said coaches, athletes and parents have expressed concern about health and safety issues. The new weight area will be on the west side of the O'Plaine building's gymnasium. Brierton said the extra space will allow Warren to aggressively seek donations from equipment manufacturers. Plans call for the new weight area to be enclosed and secured with a padded cage and locked gate.
Track stimulus projects
A new Web site introduced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture will allow people to learn about, share and discuss federal stimulus funding in states and communities. The site, www.usda.gov/recovery, also includes a blog, podcast, RSS feeds and other interactive tools for citizens to participate by sharing stories or providing feedback. Earlier this year, the agency launched a mapping function that allows viewers to see where and how much USDA is spending American Recovery and Reinvestment Act money.
