Libertyville sisters take pageant prizes

Libertyville pageant winners, selected June 18, included sisters for the first time in recent memory.

Morgan Gawlik, 16, who will be a junior at Libertyville High School, was named Miss Libertyville when winners were announced at the Libertyville Days festivities.

Her parents are Mary Ann and Michael Gawlik.

Kierstin Thompson, 11, was named Junior Miss Libertyville, and her sister Sophia, 6, was named Little Miss Libertyville.

Kierstin will enter sixth grade at Oak Grove School. Sophia will enter first grade.

Their parents are Edna and Gary Thompson.

"I've had sisters participate several times but I don't know they've won at the same time," said Bunny Otrembiak, a former Miss Libertyville who has run the pageant for 20 years.

Seventeen contestants in all three categories participated this year. That represented an increase from last year and included several new families, she said.

Winners are eligible to participate in the Miss Lake County Fair pageant later this month. That competition is open to anyone who wants to enter.

The Libertyville pageant winners will participate in various community events during their reigns.

"A queen should always use her crown and title for community service purposes," Otrembiak said.
