Geneva Republican wants to replace Foster in 14th
A Geneva man announced plans Wednesday to run in the Republican primary for a chance to replace U.S. Rep. Bill Foster next year in the 14th Congressional District.
Jeff Danklefsen, 41, described himself as "just a regular guy" who is tired of frivolous government spending and bailouts. He faces at least one opponent in the primary: Ethan Hastert, the son of former Republican House Speaker Dennis Hastert.
"I think I can provide a perspective that voters don't see too often, and also help lead the Republican Party into the future," Danklefsen said. "I know what it's like to go out and work. I'm always having my pocket picked. I see how government decisions affect people."
Relatively new to politics, Danklefsen is a 12-year resident of Geneva and a maintenance manager for a property management firm in St. Charles, which he would not disclose. This is his first run for elected office.
Danklefsen, a married father of two, said he has volunteered with the Kane County Taxpayer Tea Party, the Boy Scouts of America and his local church. He also is a martial arts instructor.
Foster, a Democrat from Batavia, said Wednesday he is not yet concerned with the 2010 election.
"We spend far too much time campaigning," he said. "I'll start thinking about the campaign after I know everyone who's running."
Foster, a former Fermilab scientist, beat four fellow Democrats and two Republicans in a 2008 special election after Hastert resigned.
The 14th Congressional District includes parts of DeKalb, DuPage, Kane and Kendall counties.
