Suicide group meets:
Attempters' of Suicide support group meets from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Stone Manor, 528 S. Batavia Ave. (Route 31), Batavia. It is sponsored by Suicide Prevention Services. Call (630) 482-9696, or visit spsfv.org.
Enjoy Lincoln tea:
Mary Todd Lincoln is a well-known figure in Batavia history due to her brief stay at Bellevue Place after the death of her husband, President Abraham Lincoln. Throughout her life, Lincoln was known for her elegant strawberry tea parties. Guests will have the opportunity to attend a Mary Lincoln Strawberry Tea from 2 to 4 p.m. July 19 at Lincoln Inn Banquets, 1345 S. Batavia Ave. The cost is $16 per person and will include a program, tea and strawberry treats. Several Lincoln presenters will be on hand. Japanese Garden open:
The Japanese Garden at Fabyan Villa Museum is open from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Sundays through October. Private or group tours can be arranged during nonpublic hours. Call (630) 377-6424 or visit ppfv.org. The Fabyan Villa Museum and Japanese Garden are owned by the Kane County Forest Preserve District and operated by Preservation Partners of the Fox Valley. Both sites are in the Fabyan Forest Preserve off Route 31, just north of Fabyan Parkway, in Geneva.
Another award for top scholar:
Recent Elgin Community College graduate Andrea Andrada is the 2009 recipient of the Gigi Campbell Student Trustee Award from the Illinois Community College Trustees Association. The award, named after a former Prairie State College student trustee, recognizes exemplary student leadership. Andrada, of Elgin, is one of the most accomplished students in Elgin Community College history and has won an impressive list of accomplishments and awards. She recently finished a one-year term as the student representative on the Community College District 509 board of trustees. Other honors include being named to the First Team of USA Today's All-USA Community College Academic Team and as a New Century Scholar by the Coca Cola Scholars Foundation. Andrada graduated from ECC last month with a 4.0 grade-point-average and continues her studies this fall at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She plans to become a lawyer.
