Nothing sizzling right now on plans for Fuddruckers

The burgers piled high with your favorite toppings will have to wait for now.

Many of you have been calling and e-mailing, wondering if there has been any progress on the Fuddruckers restaurant planned for the Randall Road corridor in Batavia.

Resident Jan Helander e-mailed too, wondering if the restaurant was still happening, and if not, what was happening with the site.

The answer for now, at least, is that nothing is happening there.

Jerry Swanson, community development director for the city of Batavia, said Fuddruckers corporate has a lease on the property at Randall and McKee roads. However, he said, the folks at corporate decided they wanted a franchisee to open a restaurant there.

And so far, no franchisee has been found.

"For now, no one appears to be stepping forward and wanting to take the franchise," Swanson said.

However, it doesn't look like anything else will open there soon either, as Fuddruckers still has the lease on the property and will for some time to come.

"They are paying top dollar for the space from the landlord," Swanson said. "They have something like a 20 or 30 year lease.

"Until they are able to secure a franchisee, it will remain vacant for now," Swanson said.

So, if you're craving those burgers with everything piled high between the buns, you'll have to stop at one of the other burger joints along Randall, or step up and be the franchisee.
