Teens charged with Marmion vandalism

Felony charges were filed Monday against five teenagers accused of taking part in a post-graduation vandalism spree at an Aurora private school.

Police said the suspects were charged after one of them apparently felt remorse and offered to help repair the damage at Marmion Academy, 1000 Butterfield Road.

"One of the priests stated that one of the kids had come back to actually clean up," Sgt. Marie Blinco said. "And while he didn't make an omission of guilt at that time, it seemed rather strange. We brought him in and talked to him."

Charged with felony property damage and criminal trespass were 18-year-olds John T. Baron of the 1400 block of Keim Trail, St. Charles; Robert Hunt of the 1000 block of Oak Street, St. Charles; Michael J. Rubino of the 100 block of Schneider Court, North Aurora; Kyle Thompson of the 0-99 block of Larkspur Lane, Bristol; and Josef H. Weber of the 200 block of Nicole Drive, South Elgin, according to court records. Blinco said a sixth suspect was charged Friday, but information on that person was not immediately available.

The vandalism was discovered May 27 after a fire alarm went off at the college preparatory high school. Officials arrived to find extinguishers had been set off, toilet paper and other materials spread throughout the hallways and other damage, police said. Cleanup was expected to cost about $2,000.

Blinco said the suspects all are believed to be current or former students of Marmion Academy, and the vandalism timed to coincide with graduation.

Criminal property damage is a Class 3 felony with a standard sentencing range of two to five years in prison or probation. Trespass is a Class B misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail, court supervision or fines.

Blinco said arrest warrants were issued for the teens Monday. Their court dates and bond will be set after they are taken into custody.
