Boeing wins $750 million B-52 support work from U.S.

Boeing Co. won a contract valued at $750 million to continue providing engineering services and maintenance to the U.S. Air Force's fleet of B-52s.

Boeing will examine ways to upgrade old equipment by building prototypes as part of the 10-year contract, company spokesman Jarrod Bartlett said in an interview. The Defense Department announced the contract today on its Web site.

The long-range bombers, which have been used in the war in Iraq, entered the Air Force fleet in 1954. The military service operates 76 of the planes, which can carry nuclear missiles as well as laser-guided bombs.

Boeing has held the support contract for the B-52s since 1999 and was awarded today's order without competition, Bartlett said.
