Mourners gather to honor Chicago broadcaster John Callaway

Mourners have gathered to remember longtime Chicago public television broadcaster John Callaway.

Colleagues, friends and relatives gathered at the Rockefeller Memorial Chapel on Chicago's South Side on Sunday to remember Callaway. The broadcaster died Tuesday after suffering a heart attack in a Wisconsin store. He was 72.

Callaway was the longtime host of WTTW's "Chicago Tonight" program. After retiring from the job in 1999, Callaway returned to host the station's "Chicago Stories" documentary series.

A native of New Martinsville, W.Va., Callaway arrived in Chicago to begin his journalism career at the City News Bureau. He was news director at WBBM-AM, and CBS Radio's vice president for development. Callaway became WTTW's news director in 1974.
